Challenge

Prior to working with AMPECO, Chargespot partnered with an EV charging software provider that had a charge point operator business and offered similar services to Chargespot’s competitors in the same market. Thus, they acted more like a direct competitor than a pure software provider. They also had difficulties catching up with Chargespot’s fast-evolving business model and increased demand for timely and quality support.

As a result, Chargespot faced limitations in creating complex, multi-component tariffs. They were unable to establish special roaming rates or tailor tariffs for specific user groups and locations. This restricted their ability to differentiate themselves in the competitive EV charging market and effectively control pricing for EV drivers.

Chargespot faced challenges due to limited support for dynamic load management (DLM) at their public charging sites. DLM is essential for efficiently distributing power at locations with insufficient energy to install the required number or type of chargers.

Their former EV charging software provider had limited API, which hindered their ability to automate billing for their customers and comply with local regulations. Their system also had significant constraints in roaming, particularly in building direct OCPI connections with other charge point operators (CPOs) or e-Mobility Service Providers (eMSPs). The complexity of connecting with Hubject further compounded these limitations.

Solution

With AMPECO, Chargespot could differentiate itself in the market through innovative pricing strategies. They introduced various flexible tariff options, moving beyond the market norm of a fixed fee per kWh. This included subscription plans, vouchers, promo codes, and the ability to assign specific tariffs to different user groups.

Next, AMPECO significantly enhanced Chargespot’s dynamic load management (DLM) capabilities. This improvement became critical as they expanded their number of installations, meeting the growing customer demand for efficient power distribution.

The partnership with AMPECO expanded Chargespots roaming offering, enabling them to seamlessly connect with Hubject to provide EV drivers access to over 500,000 chargers across Europe. It also allowed them to establish direct OCPI connections with other CPOs and eMSPs.

AMPECO’s advanced API allows Chargespot to create a unified database consolidating EV charging, electricity, and gas consumption user information. This enables the development of individual tariffs. The flexibility provided by AMPECO’s API empowers their internal tech team to create custom features and functionalities tailored to specific business needs, local regulations, and customer preferences.

Result

Recognizing AMPECO’s capability to meet their needs, Chargespot confidently migrated their chargers, locations, users, and RFID cards to the AMPECO platform. The migration was executed flawlessly, without eliciting a single customer complaint or support ticket, underscoring the migration’s effectiveness.

A key focus for Chargespot is the development of comprehensive reimbursement packages for fleet customers. The company is also exploring ways to integrate its utility services with EV charging with AMPECO’s API. This innovative approach would involve invoicing employers for the charging sessions under a corporate billing system while simultaneously reimbursing the EV drivers who are also customers of WATT+VOLT’s utility business.

Furthermore, Chargespot aims to provide detailed reports that add value to its business clients, offering insights into charging patterns and costs.

Following the successful migration of WATT+VOLT by MYTILINEOS Energy & Metals, all chargers formerly operated by MYTILINEOS Energy Sector “Protergia Charge” have also been seamlessly migrated to the AMPECO platform under a new brand name “Chargespot – Powered by Protergia”.

By 2026, Chargespot – Powered by Protergia plans to activate more than 5000 locations for public charging, vastly expanding their network and accessibility for EV drivers.

“In under 5 minutes, 95% of our network was up and running on the AMPECO backend. The remaining 5% were not due to AMPECO but rather due to specific requirements of the charging stations. We were astonished! We had been ready to embark on a troubleshooting journey across Greece and eventually, we didn’t.”
