In the heart of the Midwest, the state of Iowa is forging ahead in the pursuit of a greener and more sustainable future. Thanks to a range of forward-thinking initiatives, electric vehicle (EV) adoption is gaining momentum across the state. Among these initiatives are impactful EV charging incentives provided by Ames Electric Services, Cedar Falls Utilities, and the ZEV Supply Equipment program. Let’s explore how these incentives are driving change and electrifying the Hawkeye State.

Iowa DOT Releases NEVI Funding Opportunity for EV Charging Infrastructure

The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) and its collaborators have issued a notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) for the distribution of federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) formula funds within the state. The NOFO aims to facilitate the rollout of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in Iowa. Interested parties can access NOFO documents and related materials on the Iowa DOT’s dedicated Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Deployment Plan website: https://iowadot.gov/iowaevplan. The application deadline is March 13, 2024, with anticipated award notifications approximately 120 days later. Questions about the NOFO can be directed to iowanevi.nofo@iowadot.us, and inquiries will be addressed on a rolling 45-day basis, with responses posted weekly. Garrett Pedersen, Director of the Systems Planning Bureau at IDOT, can be contacted at garrett.pedersen@iowadot.us for further information.

Ames Electric Services Smart Rebates: Charging Ahead

Ames Electric Services is lighting the way with its Smart Rebates program, aimed at commercial customers seeking to establish publicly available EV charging stations. The program offers a rebate of up to $500 per port for the purchase and installation of these charging stations. This generous financial support acts as a catalyst for businesses to embrace EV charging infrastructure, making it more convenient and accessible for EV users.

It’s important to note that the Smart Rebates are available for a limited time until the allocated funds are exhausted.

Cedar Falls Utilities: Empowering Electric Mobility

Cedar Falls Utilities is making its mark on Iowa’s EV landscape with its commitment to non-residential electric customers. Through its rebate program, qualified customers can receive a rebate of $600 per new port for installed ChargePoint Level 2 chargers. This initiative not only supports the growth of EV charging infrastructure but also encourages businesses to invest in sustainable transportation options. With a maximum of 4 new ports per year, the program offers flexibility for businesses to gradually expand their charging capabilities, contributing to the larger goal of promoting electric mobility.

ZEV Supply Equipment Program

The ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle) Supply Equipment program is a multi-faceted effort aimed at transforming Iowa’s EV charging landscape. This $1.1 million program is open to many applicants, including for-profit businesses, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and transportation planning organizations. The program focuses on two project types:

  • Publicly Accessible DC Fast Charger Corridor Sites: With $950,000 allocated, this component targets the development of Direct Current (DC) Fast Charger Corridor sites along key Iowa corridors, enhancing the convenience of long-distance EV travel.
  • Level 2 Community Charging Sites: A funding pool of $150,000 supports the establishment of publicly accessible Level 2 Community Charging sites, ensuring that EV charging infrastructure is well-distributed across the state.

Cruising into Iowa’s Electric Future

Iowa’s commitment to EV adoption is palpable, and these charging incentives are emblematic of the state’s dedication to a sustainable and electrified future. Through the efforts of Ames Electric Services, Cedar Falls Utilities, and the ZEV Supply Equipment program, Iowa is paving the way for cleaner transportation options.

Whether you’re a business owner, a local authority, or an advocate for sustainability, these incentives provide a compelling reason to engage in the EV movement. By embracing these opportunities, you’re not only contributing to a cleaner environment but also demonstrating your commitment to driving positive change in the Hawkeye State and beyond. As EVs silently hum along Iowa’s highways, they carry the promise of a cleaner, more sustainable tomorrow.
