Tennessee’s Push for Greener Roads: Introducing the TEVI Program

Through this program, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is spearheading efforts to make EV charging accessible and convenient across the state, encouraging both residents and visitors to make the switch to eco-friendly transportation.
In an exciting move towards a cleaner and greener transportation future, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has unveiled the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the Tennessee Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (TEVI) Program. This initiative aims to make electric vehicle (EV) charging accessible across the state, taking a significant step towards reducing emissions and embracing sustainable travel.
What’s the TEVI Program About?
The TEVI Program is a remarkable opportunity for Tennessee to contribute to the broader goal of creating a nation-wide network of EV charging stations. This vision is backed by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which dedicates $7.5 billion to boost the availability of EV charging infrastructure across the United States. For Tennessee, this translates to around $88.3 million over five years (from 2022 to 2026).
A Boost for EV Charging Infrastructure
The TEVI Program is all about encouraging organizations and bodies to install, manage, and maintain EV charging stations. TDOT will carefully review applications that align with the program’s requirements and will financially support selected projects that fit the bill. The program is open to various entities, including corporations, partnerships, utilities, local governments, and tribal organizations that are authorized to operate within Tennessee. Successful applicants will need to be registered as businesses in the state.
Who is Eligible for Funding?
The TEVI Program offers financial support for a range of eligible costs associated with EV charging infrastructure projects. This includes everything from pre-construction work and grid updates to actual installation, construction, operation, and maintenance costs. TDOT will cover up to 80% of these eligible costs, while the awarded projects must contribute a minimum of 20% as a non-Federal cost-share.
While the program is generous, it’s important to note that not all costs are eligible for reimbursement. Expenses incurred before the Notice to Proceed 1 (NTP1) is issued, ongoing maintenance, staffing, and electricity costs are some examples of what won’t be covered.
Applying for TEVI Funding
To be considered for TEVI funding, interested parties must complete and submit the TEVI Program Application Packet by November 1, 2023. This packet includes detailed information about the project budget, qualifications, and how the proposed project aligns with the NEVI and TEVI program criteria.
